The Importance of Keyword Research

Why is keyword research important?

The reason is simple! Keyword research gives you a blueprint of your site. It is the factor that determines the success or failure of your website. If you did not do a thorough keyword research before building your web site, chances are it is not getting the ranking in the search engine.

If you want to rank high in the search engine and receive lot of free traffic, you need to build a quality website that is keyword focused and content oriented.

When doing a keyword research, follow the guidelines below and you won’t be wrong.

  1. When selecting the keyword, choose a phrase instead of a single word. The reason is because a phrase is more representative of your site overall theme and the chances of achieving a higher ranking is higher.
  2. Always make sure that your keyword has high demand and low supply, i.e. high number of search volume and low number of competitors.
  3. Make full use of existing free resources to do your keyword research. The best tools around are Overture, Google keyword Tool and Wordtracker. For more advanced search, you can try WebCEO (which is free as well)
  4. Always create a keyword list, making up of one specific keyword and a number of related keywords, for every single page of your web site. The specific keyword is the keyword that you want the search engine to rank you for while the related keywords are meant to make your site more focus without exceeding the keyword density limit.
  5. If you run out of ideas as to what keyword to use, check out your competitor’s site (using Google search) on their keywords. This will save you a lot of brainstorming time. Analyze their keywords to get the supply and demand. If possible, use their keywords as your keywords.
